Daily English Conversation -Deforestation

David: Hey John, what’s going on?

John: Fine. Thank you.

David: I saw that a big tree was cut down in front of our school. I heard that a flat will be built there.

John: Don’t say that anymore! I feel so bad that I can’t look away anymore. I made a great friendship with the tree since the day I first came to school as a child.

I remember how much I played on the altar built under that huge tree after the holiday.

David: People who are mad with the pride of civilization seem to have forgotten the contribution of trees.

Intoxicated by this onslaught of urbanization, deforestation is going on everywhere from the Himalayas to the Sundarbans.

John: Someone will at least think that the loss is their own in the end. In this terrible greed, people are destroying their own civilization.

Earth’s average temperature is rising, polar ice is melting, Earth’s water level is rising, biodiversity is being depleted as plants are declining, ultraviolet rays are also having an irresistible effect on the environment.

All in all, the incidence of various diseases is also increasing.

David: Not only that, you know, according to experts, when the size of a country’s land area falls below 35 percent, then that country will face disaster.

Many countries in the world, including  Bangladesh, are now facing this problem.

John: Actually, ‘a tree is a soul’ — this sentence should not be just a slogan, it should be made an unavoidable condition of living. Otherwise, there will be no escape from this terrible destruction.

A Memorable Sporting Event

I am going to talk about a memorable sporting event. Last month I watched an interesting game on TV. It was a world cup cricket match between Bangladesh and India. In the match Bangladesh, quite a newcomer in the test arena, beat India, one of the best cricket teams in the world. It was a very important match for Bangladesh as by winning the match Bangladesh was promoted to the super eight levels of the tournament. It was a great achievement for the Bangladesh team as never before could Bangladesh pass the first round of the tournament. This win brought great joy not only for the cricket team but also for the people of the whole of Bangladesh. I was also overjoyed at the event.  it was certainly one of the most pleasant events in my life.

d. Successful sportsmen can play roles like ambassadors of the country.

e. International sporting events make people of a country united.

I think it is essential for every country to spend money on sporting events like the Olympics and the world cup because the prospective benefits earned from these tournaments outweigh the expenses.

3. A big amount of money is spent on testing the use of illegal drugs in sports. What do you about that?

I believe it is important to keep international cricket events free from illegal drugs. If tests are not regularly carried out to check the use of illegal drugs, some sportsmen will be encouraged to use them and get an undue advantage.

4. Major sporting events and sports teams from different nations are sponsored by big companies these days. How could sponsorships of this nature be positive and negative?

Nowadays big companies sponsor major sporting events and sports teams. The positive aspects of such practice are as follows

a. International sporting events and teams require a huge amount of money. If the big companies did not sponsor the sporting events and teams then it would be very difficult to organize such events.

b. Due to the sponsorship of the big companies sports teams and star players get a lot of money. This encouraged young people to be successful in sports.

On the other hand, there are some demerits of such sponsorship as well. Sponsorship may put due pressure on the teams and sportsmen. Sometimes, this pressure hampers the performance of sportsmen and teams.

IELTS Cue Card Topics 2021

A few months ago I along with some of my friends went to Sonargaon. We started from Dhaka and it took us about one and half hours to reach Sonargaon. In Sonargaon we found many old dilapidated houses. They bore the marks of their prosperous age. The walls of those houses had elaborate engagements and ornamentations. We were sorry to think that such treasures of the past were being destroyed for want of restoration. Homeless people live in those deserted houses that could break down at any moment. I was told that once Isa khan arranged a horse race in that city. We went to visit the Loko Shilpa Jadugar. There were many ancient historically important things on display. We were much impressed at their beauty and craftsmanship. We took many pictures of the city with our cameras. It was already noon and we were hungry. We took the food and drink we had taken with us. Then we visited the public library there. In the library, we found many important books on Sonargaon. After that, we visited the handicraft market where we found many beautiful things made by local weavers, potters, and craftsmen. I bought a shawl for my mother and a handbag for my sister. It was about 4 p.m when we started our return journey.

An Interesting Historical Place-Follow-Up Questions

1. Did you study history at school?

Yes, we did.

2. How were you taught history when you were at school?

History was a part of the syllabus in every class from class 3 to class six. In school, we had history textbooks and history teachers.

3. Are there other ways people can learn about history outside school?

I think people can learn history outside school by reading good books about history, visiting museums and going to places of historical importance.

4. Do you think history will still be a subject in the school syllabus after 25 years?

I think history will still be a subject in the school syllabus after 25 years because history is our link with the past and by deducting the past we can not expect a better future.

5. How do people in your country feel about protecting historic buildings?

The people of our country feel the need to protect the historic buildings. The government is also willing to save them but Bangladesh is a poor country.

Here the government can not even fulfill many basic needs of the people while restoration of historic buildings and places will need a lot of money.

I think the international community should come forward to helping our government in this respect.

6. Do you think an area can get benefit from having an interesting historic place in the vicinity?

An area can certainly get benefit from having an interesting historic place in the vicinity. For instance, if there is a historic place in the area, many tourists and visitors will go to the place.

They will spend money in the area.  As a result, there will be more employment opportunities and income for the local people.

Moreover, the government will take more development plans for the area if it has an interesting historic place.

7. What do you think will happen to historic places or buildings in the future?

I think people will become more conscious about restoring historic buildings and places. The international community will also work more actively for the restoration of such buildings and places.

I also hope that the world will get rid of poverty in the near future with the development of technology and an increase in industrial and agricultural production.

As a result, the government will take all possible measures for the restoration, renovation, repair, and preservation of places of historic importance.

IELTS Cue Card Topics 2021-Your Favorite Game

I am going to talk about my favorite game. Kabadi is my favorite game that is also the national game of our country. it is assumed that  Kabadi was originated in south Asia about four thousand years ago. Some people connect the game with the Indian myths. This game is commonly played in rural areas of Bangladesh. Now Kabadi is played in international sports competitions like SAF Games and Asian Games. Kabadi is a game between two teams. Each team contains an equal number of players. The playground is divided into two equal parts. The teams stand in lines facing each other. One player of a team is allowed to enter the ground of the other team. He has to hold his breath and touch as many people of the opposite team as he can and return to his ground. If he can touch any player of the opponent team, the touched player becomes inactive. The game continues until all the players of a team become inactive. This game is very interesting and a source of entertainment for the rural people of Bangladesh. Rural youths play this game in their spare time while people encircle the playground and watch the game.

IELTS Cue Card Topics 2021-Your Favorite Game-Follow-Up Questions

1. What do you consider more important in sport: winning or participating?

I consider participating in sports to be more important than winning. But when we participate we should try our best to win. However continuous losing without any win makes sport a matter of shame and irritation.

2. Do you support sportsmen taking drugs for improving their performance?

In my opinion, harmful drugs and narcotics should not be allowed in sports. However harmless drugs that may improve performance should not have any restrictions.

3. Why do you think some sportsmen take drugs for improving their performance?

Some sportsmen take illegal drugs for improving their performance thinking that they will get away with it.

4. Why are some countries more successful than others in international sports events like the world cup and the Olympic Games?

For being successful in international sports events, different things such as rigorous training, hard work, a good coach, and a conducive environment are required.

All the countries do not have such facilities and environments. I believe only those countries that have such facilities do well in the international competitions.

SSC Important Composition Writing – English Rajib

Let’s learn SSC Important Composition Writing!

“Time marches on but memories stay

Torturing silently the rest of our days”

With the passage of time, we grow older, and as go forward some shreds of memory come before our mind’s eyes with their might. They make us feel how better things were when we were completely free from all these oppressive burdens that we are to face now. Of all these inspiring moments of life, childhood appears to be the most enjoyable. This is the time when we are completely free from all cares, anxieties, and responsibilities.

I can hardly remember anything before I was five.  I was born in a small district town in Bangladesh, the mighty rivers, the Padma and Megna, flow beside it. The small river Dakatia flows beside our house. Every day we had a walk by the side of the river in the afternoon. Sometimes we played in the small field adjacent to our house. There was a big banyan tree; sometimes I went with other boys near that tree. But my mother got frightened when she heard about it. She said that snakes sometimes live in the holes of the tree. She forbade us to go there.

During holidays when my mother went to sleep at noon, we sometimes stole away and went to the railway line. There I together with other children gathered pebbles. We watched how the trains passed with innumerable unknown faces. Once the train went out of our sight, it passed on to an unknown world. I became eager to know what was there outside the horizon.  On holidays sometimes I went with other children to swim in the river. I felt a thrill of joy when I swam on the waves of the small river. People around us are prohibited from going further.

When I was a child I wrote one page every day and showed it to my father when he came back from his office. In spite of great fatigue, he used to cheer me up with small rewards like toffees or promised about something so that I could fare well in the examination. Whenever my father got the time he used to tell us about the life stories of great men in the world, how they became great by dint of preference and undaunted spirit.

Eventually, I neglected my studies. As a result, I cut a sorry figure in the examination. I got only ten in arithmetic. For this, I became very ashamed. My elder brother and sister used to tease me for this. I became furious with anger towards them. I decided not to talk to them ever. My father was very much amused. He called me and told me that I should not neglect any of my duties. he advised me to be particular in my studies. He encouraged me that in the future I would do well in the examination.

During the summer holidays, my father was away from the village home. We had lots of fun then. We climbed mango trees, picked ripe mangoes, and ate them to our heart’s content. We swam and played. We ran beside the cornfield. We were free like anything. The whole day we roamed about the village and collected blackberries, litchis, and whatever fruits we could get hold of. We came back home when we were extremely hungry. When my father came back from the town we had been really sorry.

These memories come into my memory off and on and it is a great memory to reminisce. These days cannot be restored only the memory it has left can be recalled for momentary relief and joy. Wherever I go whatever I do, I feel these things are always with me to cheer me in the mood of gloom and sorrow. I cannot help telling the greatest lines of Wordsworth:

“Heavens lies about us in our infancy.”

Sports Day at Your School

Prize giving day is an important event in the life of every school or college. Sports in themselves are an indispensable part of the study. School or college life without sports would be dull and dreary.

This auspicious day brings joy and merriment to the heart of the young learners and helps them relax the burden of the tight school schedule.

The prize-giving day of our school was held last week. It was held on the spacious school grounds.

The deputy commissioner was the chief guest. A huge shamiana was pitched on one side of the ground to accommodate guests.

The whole playground was tastefully decorated. It had been decorated with flags, festoons, and balloons a day earlier. The school premise assumed a festive look.

The chief guest arrived in time. He took the salute. The sportsman and women and NCC cadets and NSS volunteers participated in the march past. Mila, the best athlete of the school, led the march past.

The first event was a hundred-meter race. It drew a large number of participants. There were three heats.

Then started long and high jumps. Simultaneously there were other actions like the javelin and the discus throw.

The members of the staff who acted as judges were seen moving to and fro along with coaches and ex-sportsmen of the school.

The events, which evoked the greatest interest, were the 400-meter race, bicycle race, Chati race, and hurdle race by girls.

The spectators went into peels of laughter when they saw boys running sack races. Some boys just fell down and could not move.

The tug of war between the science and art faculty members was very interesting. The art side won the war.

Dress as you like was the special event. Everybody was amused when a student of class ten dressed as our headmaster.

He was so good in his make-up that except for the difference in age we found it difficult to see who the real headmaster was. In the events, a few new records of the school were established.

In two cases, the students improved upon their own previous records.

The last item the musical chair’s race in which the guests participated was very amusing.

The headmaster read out the achievements of the school in sports during the year. At the day’s end, the time came for the prizes to be given away.

The chief guest gave away the prizes with words of encouragement for each of the winners.

He said that in a competition participation is more important than winning.

He highlighted the importance of sports in life and hinted at Bangladesh’s dismal performance at the Olympics. He promised all help to the school in the matter of sports.

The principal then thanked him and the other guests. The chief declared the sports meet closed and it was over.

Best Short Story-My Father’s Pen – English Rajib

maximios

Share

I have a pen in my hand. I have borrowed this pen from my father. But my hand shakes as I write these lines.

I can only draw a black and white picture with this pen while my father used to draw abstract colors. When my father was very sick he didn’t want to write.

His hand would shake and he would put the pen down very abruptly. He didn’t like his handwriting –the loss of beauty in it.

My hand also shakes but for me it’s a lack of beauty of imagination. The pen didn’t move in his hands and it does not move in my hand-apparently for different reasons.

My hand also shakes but for me it’s a lack of beauty of imagination. The pen didn’t move in his hands and it does not move in my hand-apparently for different reasons.

But I would try to draw a picture –only once with his pen. Then I would request anyone who knew my father’s pen to forgive me for once. At least I am not spoiling his canvas.

A child’s face, a woman’s face a smile, a well-presented sentence, -what’s common in all these? All decent beautiful simple things used to attract my father.

I don’t know the full history of my father’s life, each and every corner of it and I don’t intend to find those.

These were his private corners where he dwelled in his thoughts to take different colours to paint impressions of pictures like Manet and Monet. I leave those places to others to find.

How was he as a father? To be honest I don’t know in set standards. He never hugged me, walked beside me in my difficult times, and participated in any dialogue with me.

It was all about impressions not defined. It was the case with my father. Right now if I look back I can probably find the meaning of most of the frequent ‘pauses’ but before my pilgrimage into his world, these pauses were disturbing, just barren silences.

Then I realized he bathed all his children with a different kind of love, one that’s better expressed in silent gestures.

For most of my life I saw him from a distance and only during the last five months did I see him from close. Both of these situations (seeing too closely or from too distantly ….) hindered my vision.

But in between blurred visions, I can draw an incomplete picture –one side of a person that others don’t know about.

During the last five months, she fought a different kind of war. A war against death, disease, and disability …..

He fought tremendously against all these ugly events. He didn’t fight for his lift but he fought intensely to retain the decency of life.

Sometimes it would become very difficult for him to construct a sentence. He would pick just two words and compose something beautiful.

Sometimes my brother would take her little daughter by my father’s bed side and ask him about her.

With great effort, Abba would try to smile and then would say, ‘you are my Lathi’.

The word would be like a short story always with a rich unfinished feeling…..! Children propped up his strength …. That’s why he would use the world stick.

During dialysis, he would ask me about it. I would say holding his hand, “It’s nothing Abba, it’s just that your blood is being cleansed.”

There was tremendous trauma during the process, his body would be frighteningly unstable and with intense pain in his eyes, he would say, “I am being cleansed of impurities. There would be deep religious meaning to every word he said.

I brought back two books from Abba’s bookcase. One is speculative philosophers’. The book smells of a different time and place.

With time the pages have turned a little yellowish but the red lines of a pencil are bright.

Underlining words of wisdom. It speaks of human knowledge, the way to purity, the essence of mind, and surprisingly all come back to the identity of my father. Abba was from a different time –the last of the modest thinkers!

He lived a simple life, used simple words, had simple dreams, and had the prophetic gift of expressing all these too simply –that‘s what attracted his readers.

We have crossed the borders and live in a different time but anyone who is willing to make a journey can do so. His profound simple thoughts and imaginations are archived.

Different pens will draw different strokes to explore the rich unexplored world of his short stories.

But this is how I remember my father. Someone gave me wisdom and enlightenment in complete silence. He had a rare gift that’s why I borrowed his pen for once-to write about him.

As I move my pen back and forth I am trying to communicate with his mind as underlined by red lines in his book ‘….. the mind which clearly excels the body has power to a greater degree. And thus the mind is proved immortal if it can exist per se…..’

We have crossed the borders and live in a different time but anyone who is willing to make a journey can do so. His profound simple thoughts and imaginations are archived.

Different pens will draw different strokes to explore the rich unexplored world of his short stories.

How to Avoid Criticism – English Rajib

maximios
0 119
Share

How to Avoid Criticism ? Have you ever encountered criticism? Surely! I believe that sometimes we all encounter some criticism in life. But if it is rarely to tolerate critical people, then it is acceptable. One of the two annoyances can be overcome. But if you get annoyed and criticized frequently you should not tolerate it! What if someone is annoying and criticizing the environment, life, and work around you?

Remember, the person who is criticizing you is doing the job to downplay you, to make you mentally disturbed. This criticism does not actually have any basis. On the contrary, when you go to protest he becomes happier because he understands that his purpose has been successful. But protest wherever there is a need for protest. Ask the person directly without any hesitation.

Although the number of skilled people in our society is less, the number of people skilled in the criticism is not less. Some of the main actions of some people are criticism but none of them thinks that this unnecessary criticism is sometimes very harsh and may scarify others’ minds. The list of critics is not only the people of the society but also the family members, and friends. Works, behavior, nothing is exempt from criticism. Sometimes criticisms are made for your good. You can correct yourself in criticism. But baseless criticism does not only cause trouble but also creates inferiority within the mind. Let’s take a look at three important things you can do in the case of intense and baseless criticism.

Do not Listen to Baseless Criticism

Ignore criticism. Avoid baseless criticism and critics. Why do not you just shorten the words that have no basis? Why do you think that people will be carelessly orthodox? Just as you know yourself, your friends and family also know you. What your friends and family think of you is important to you. Other people said baseless words; you do not care about this. On the other hand, your friends and family will not be unnecessarily criticized by you. Let them know the truth behind the criticism. In general, which criticism will listen to you and which criticism will not be paid attention completely depends on you. Listen to the person whom you think is important to you. Find out the reasons behind his criticism, and not anyone else. To avoid criticism say nothing.

Ignore Them

If you are not able to stop the criticism of annoying people even after trying these efforts patently, then clearly avoid them. It may be the most effective way to ignore or neglect someone. Responding to someone’s criticism, he finds reasons to repeat the same process. But if you do not show any reaction to his constant criticism, he will not find any reason to bother you again. Your silent behavior will make him aware of his behavior and hint, and perhaps his self-realization will happen. That is we should learn how to avoid criticism hatred and jealousy

Be Strong for the Needs

If the criticizer is not aware of the extent of his practice then force him to become aware. Make him aware by initially giving him some hints. Even if he is not able to understand your hint, then call him directly or make a phone call and make clear the outline between him and you.

Set Your Own Borders

Be clear about what you can bear and what you cannot bear. To be more explicit, be clear about what you should tolerate and what should not be tolerated. Then keep your distance from the critical and annoying people. Remember that you have a personal life and you have full rights to protect your personal life and environment.

If you fail to show the proper response to someone else’s behavior immediately, you will certainly be attacked by annoying people. Because the annoying people are not aware of their boundaries. So it is foolish to expect the highest from them. Keep your personality boundaries more than that. Otherwise, the behavior of annoying people will gradually narrow down the world of your independence and you will be hesitant.

Make Your Position Clear

If you are constantly disturbed by a person, tell him your position clearly, so that he is careful about contacting you later. Such people are not aware of their untoward practices. So do not hesitate to give him some instructions to explain his right to practice. Give this person some clear instructions straight away.

If the annoying person takes extra time than you need, then clarify your busyness and time shortage before meeting with him the next. This way you can predict their awareness of him. Even if you have communicated with someone via email, phone call, or social network,  make these points clear to them.

Remember that since annoying people are not aware of their abusive behavior, making them aware is not at fault, but it will reduce your annoyance. It is vital for us to know how to avoid criticism in life.

Do Not Waste Your Criticism by Criticizing the Critic

Many of the protesters want to protest immediately after hearing baseless criticism. Many people protest loudly and throw it. But it is more likely to increase rather than solve your problem. Remember, the person who is criticizing you is doing the job to downplay you, to make you mentally disturbed. This criticism does not actually have any basis. On the contrary, when you go to protest he is happier because he understands that his purpose has been successful. By giving you the opportunity to get criticized by critics expressing the trouble you have done by protesting inappropriately. Remember that whenever someone comes with a baseless criticism about you, it means they envy your progress or your position. The main reason for his criticism is that you are mentally damaged and you get rid of a good position. So do not fill someone’s mind by protesting unfounded criticism.

Do not Hesitate to Protest When You Need It

In some cases, if the situation is ignored, the damage is high. Keep in mind one more thing, if you keep your head down and quiet all the time, then the level of criticism will increase without you. Strongly protest in cases where your head is about to be raised. But do not hide it in the gossip, but instead, ask the critics directly. Want to know the reason for criticism against you unnecessarily. Be boldly confronting them with criticism whether someone is with you or not. If you do not learn to protest then it is your loss if you can protect yourself from such baseless criticism, then your respect will increase. Confidence will increase.

Not all people in the world are good, not all people are like-minded. So you have to keep your personality to yourself. The annoying people must initially try to solve them with a hint. If you do not work then you have to be tough. In no way you should lose your personality and position.

Of Persons with Light Fingers – English Rajib

A thief believes everybody steals. When two thieves quarrel, the farmer whose cow was stolen by one of them gets back the animal. This is a Finnish proverb. Ambrose Bierce is of the opinion that a kleptomaniac is a rich thief. Most people have a criminal propensity and Edgar Howe says that many a man is saved from being a thief by finding that everything is locked up. This means the absence of opportunity compels him to be honest.

Published over three decades ago, Manoj Basu’s Nishikutumba details the modus operandi of a burglar named Shaheb-chor(Thief) who surreptitiously enters at night the room of a recently-married young woman and fondles and hugs her while she is asleep. As his tender but nimble touch on sensitive parts of her body arouses her libido she is immersed in sensuous pleasure. While she is in the orgiastic urge, he removes the necklace, waist-lace, and other jewelry items on her person. Afterward getting to sleep again, she loosens her grips and the thief quietly slips out of the house to decamp with the gold ornaments.

People, who are cheated by shopkeepers or spend more money than others while buying things, keep it a guarded secret at home lest they are ridiculed by the members of the family. An overly self-confident in-law of mine-once a robust sportsman with the credit of being a university blue in the forties -was a victim of an attack by a ‘light-fingered gentleman’ at a bus terminal. Prior to his journey to a north-western town of the country, he was repeatedly cautioned not to tuck his purse into the hip pocket of his trousers because that is the spot from where pickpockets can easily pick up money and other desired objects. Giving a damn to urgings and words of caution he put the purse in his hip pocket and the inevitable happened. Then, it is by borrowing from a fellow passenger that he could reach his destination.

Well, he is not alone cheated. Hundreds of bus passengers and men and women in crowded places find their pockets cleared off everywhere in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

Myron Stearns wrote an article on these people in the Rotarian magazine which was subsequently abridged by J Maxtone Graham in 1965. He began his write-up speaking about the skill of a conjurer called Borra. On the Christmas of 1964, a man taking a ringside seat for the circus at Olympia reached for his money to buy chocolates. His leather wallet had gone. In a dozen seats around the ring, other circus goers were also discovering unexpected losses. Not only wallets were missing; wristwatches, cuff-links, purses, and coins had vanished, even from trouser pockets. One man lost his spectacles but their case was the circus authorities assured the worried patrons that their property would be found before the performance ended.

In the middle of the show, a man in a flamboyant Ruritanian costume entered the ring and rapidly produced each of the lost items from his pockets, restoring them to their owners. Only then did the relieved patrons recognize the face of the attentive man who, in usher’s uniform had shown them to their seats. Continuing his act, the “Ruritanian” invited three members of the audience into the ring where, without their knowledge, he stripped them of watches, jewelry, money, ties, and braces. He even took one man’s wristwatch twice.

His name was Borra, “King of the Pickpockets” who was putting on his customary brilliant performance. Fortunately, he was an honest man, not a professional pickpocket. But what happened to his circus audience happens to hundreds of people every week-except that they rarely get their possessions back.

Most people have no concept of a pickpocket’s skill and daring. The “dip” or “buzzer” as he is called by his fellow criminals is a craftsman who often works with a gang. One member may appear to be a university student, another workman, a third a good-looking woman out shopping. The “stalls” or “hustlers” are usually disagreeable toughs, who jostle the victim, barging into him, or knocking his hat so that he has to raise his hands to keep it from falling off. The finger the man who lifts the money is usually well dressed and well mannered – he could pass for a successful businessman. The “carrier,” who takes the goods from the finger in case he is caught, is the type that goes unnoticed in a crowd.

Movie houses, bus queues on pay-day, race meetings, and football matches are good hunting grounds for the pickpocket troupe. Sometimes they will even attract a crowd by staging the three-card trick; and when the benevolent trickster warns his customers that pickpockets are about, the instinctive pocket-patting of the on-lookers tells the fingers all they need to know.  Christmas shopping brings crowds carrying plenty of money-and armloads of parcels mean good opportunities for shoving and hustling.

A good pickpocket is likely to have the long, sensitive fingers of the musician or the surgeon. The “fork” movement, in which first and middle fingers are used as a pair of scissors, is the surest way to lift a wallet; novice pickpockets practice it on a dummy figure whose clothes are covered with tiny warning bells. Before his starting day’s work, the dip massages and pulls at the two operating fingers to make them supple. In time, the shorter first finger extends almost to the length of its neighbor.

Sometimes the pickpocket carries special equipment: a sharp knife blade, small enough to fit in a signet ring, and tiny pincers for cutting watch chains. One of the oldest dodges still in use is the false arm, perhaps strapped to a splint. The eighteenth-century woman pickpocket, Jenny Diver, is said to have invented the technique; she worked seated in stagecoaches and at inn tables,-with her “arms” apparently resting demurely on her lap. Until she was hanged at Tyburn, Jenny took £5,000 a year.

Stearns in his write-up says that the housewife with a purse on top of her shopping bag is an easy-and often doubly lucrative target. A woman who missed her handbag while shopping in London was telephoned at her suburban home the next morning. A man “speaking for the manager” of one of the stores she had visited told her that her bag had been found. Would she please make an appointment to come up and claim it?  She told him that she would catch the 10.15 train. On arrival at the managers’ office, she learned that nobody had either telephoned her or found her bag. When she got home, the house had been ransacked by thieves. They had lured her away, then let themselves in with the key they found in her handbag-and thus made a double killing.

It was estimated that pickpockets took more than 100,000 sterling pounds in London alone in the sixties. The number of reported cases is increasing by about 20 percent a year. As well as money, the victims’ lose personal documents which are often hard to replace, and jewelry that may have a sentimental value far greater than cash.

“Many of these losses can be avoided by simple precautions. Scotland Yard gives this advice for self-protection from pickpockets: Hold your handbag with your hand through the strap, gripping, the bag itself over the clasp. Don’t carry more money than you actually need. Don’t keep it in the outside pocket inside, and buttoned is safer. Keep alert in crowded places and move instantly if you are jostled. Suspect a man who sticks a newspaper under your chin. In a crowd, you can not be too suspicious of the conjurers among criminals- if you value your money,” concludes the writer. He calls them “conjurers” in the crowd who are after your money.”
